an article with examples of 5 passive voice being used

A Coward

Guy de Maupassant
He was called Handsome Signoles by the society. His name was Viscount Gontran-Joseph de Signoles.
An orphan, and possessed of an adequate income, he cut a dash, as the saying is. A good figure and a good carriage is obtained by him, a sufficient flow of words to pass for wit, a certain natural grace, an air of nobility and pride, a gallant mustache and an eloquent eye, attributes which women like.
He was in demand in drawing-rooms, sought after for vales, and in men he inspired that smiling hostility which is reserved for vital and attractive rivals. He had been suspected of several love-affairs of a sort calculated to create a good opinion of a youngster. He lived a happy, care-free life, in the most complete well-being of body and mind. He was known to be a fine swordsman and a still finer shot with the pistol.
"When I come to fight a duel," he would say, "I shall choose pistols. With that weapon, I'm sure of killing my man."
One evening, the theater was entered by him and two ladies, quite young, friends of his, whose husbands were also of the party, and after the performance they were invited by him to take ices at Tortoni's.
They had been sitting there for a few minutes when a gentleman was noticed by him at a neighboring table staring obstinately at one of the ladies of the party. She seemed embarrassed and ill at ease, and bent her head. At last she said to her husband:
"There's a man staring at me. I don't know him; do you?"

active and passive voice

Everyone uses active and passive voice everyday, but most people still can't differentiate the difference between active and passive voice. On this opportunity i will try to explain what i know about active and passive voice.

What Is Active Voice?

I'll start with active voice because it's simpler. In an active sentence, the subject object of the sentence. is doing the action. A straightforward example is the sentence "Steve loves Amy." Steve is the subject, and he is doing the action: he loves Amy, the

Another example is the title of the Marvin Gaye song “I Heard It through the Grapevine.” "I" is the subject, the one who is doing the action. "I" is hearing "it," the object of the sentence.

What Is Passive Voice?

In passive voice, the target of the action gets promoted to the subject position. Instead of saying, "Steve loves Amy," I would say, "Amy is loved by Steve." The subject of the sentence becomes Amy, but she isn't doing anything. Rather, she is just the recipient of Steve's love. The focus of the sentence has changed from Steve to Amy.

If you wanted to make the title of the Marvin Gaye song passive, you would say “It was heard by me through the grapevine,” not such a catchy title anymore.

Is "To Be" a Sign of a Passive Sentence?

A lot of people think all sentences that contain a form of the verb “to be” are in passive voice, but that isn't true. For example, the sentence "I am holding a pen" is in active voice, but it uses the verb “am,” which is a form of “to be.” The passive form of that sentence is "The pen is being held by me."

Notice that the subject, the pen, isn't doing anything in that sentence. It's not taking an action; it's passive. One clue that your sentence is passive is that the subject isn't taking a direct action.

The active voice is the "normal" voice. This is the voice that we use most of the time. You are probably already familiar with the active voice. In the active voice, the object receives the action of the verb:
activesubjectverbobject
>
Catseatfish.
The passive voice is less usual. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb:
passivesubjectverbobject
<
Fishare eatenby cats.
The object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb:
subjectverbobject
activeEverybodydrinkswater.
passiveWateris drunkby everybody.

 SIMPLE PRESENT and SIMPLE PAST
The active object becomes the passive subject.
am/is/are +  past participle
was/were + past participle

PRESENT and PAST CONTINUOUS (PROGRESSIVE)
Passive form:
am/is/are + being + past participle
was/were + being + past participle

PRESENT PERFECT, PAST PERFECT and FUTURE PERFECT
Passive form:
have/has been + past participle
had been + past participle

FUTURE TENSES
Passive forms: will + be + past participle
is/are going to be + past participle

PRESENT / FUTURE MODALS
The passive form follows this pattern:
modal + be + past participle

PAST MODALS
The past passive form follows this pattern:
modal + have been + past participle

Construction of the Passive Voice

The structure of the passive voice is very simple:
subject + auxiliary verb (be) + main verb (past participle)
The main verb is always in its past participle form.
Look at these examples:
subjectauxiliary verb (to be)main verb (past participle)
Waterisdrunkby everyone.
100 peopleareemployedby this company.
Iampaidin euro.
Wearenotpaidin dollars.
Aretheypaidin yen

Conjugation for the Passive Voice

We can form the passive in any tense. In fact, conjugation of verbs in the passive tense is rather easy, as the main verb is always in past participle form and the auxiliary verb is always be. To form the required tense, we conjugate the auxiliary verb. So, for example:
  • present simple: It is made
  • present continuous: It is being made
  • present perfect: It has been made
Here are some examples with most of the possible tenses:
infinitiveto be washed
simplepresentIt is washed.
pastIt was washed.
futureIt will be washed.
conditionalIt would be washed.
continuouspresentIt is being washed.
pastIt was being washed.
futureIt will be being washed.
conditionalIt would be being washed.
perfect simplepresentIt has been washed.
pastIt had been washed.
futureIt will have been washed.
conditionalIt would have been washed.
perfect continuouspresentIt has been being washed.
pastIt had been being washed.
futureIt will have been being washed.
conditionalIt would have been being washed.

An article containing examples of adverbial clause used in a sentence

The Old Man with The Hind

I live in a town far away from your kingdom. I married and got myself a beautiful wife. Many years passed but we didn't have any children. I had a slave woman who had served me loyally for many years. I decided to adopt her child as my own. I soon declared him to be my heir and he became my son after the official and religious formalities. Soon enough the child grew to be healthy and strong. He was an intelligent boy at the age of ten.

One day I had to leave town on a long journey. I had some business contacts to make. So I left my adopted son and the slave woman at my home. I instructed my wife to take care of their needs till I returned.

In my absence, some ill-hearted person taught my wife the power of black magic. In her jealous state of mind, my wife decided to get rid of my adopted son and his mother. She chanted some evil words and soon transformed my ten-year-old son into a calf. She led this calf to my housekeeper. She told him that she had bought the healthy calf at a high price and it should be taken care of. Then my wife chanted more evil words and changed the slave woman into a cow. This cow she again gave to the housekeeper to take care of.

After nearly a year I came back home. After taking refreshments and resting a while, I enquired about my son and his mother, the slave woman. At this my wife bowed her head in grief. She said, "Dear, I am sorry to say that the slave woman died a few days after you left. She fell ill and couldn't be cured. As for your adopted son, he went out to play about two months ago and has not returned yet. He is nowhere to be found."

My heart was filled with sadness on hearing about the slave woman's death. But I took courage that my son was alive. I decided to search for my son. I went around the town enquiring about him but found no success. Nearly eight months went by. Soon the festival of Bairam came. As is the custom, I was to sacrifice a cow as a religious ritual. I called my housekeeper and ordered him to fetch a cow for sacrifice. Soon the housekeeper brought a cow to me. As I was about to slay it, the cow started lowing sadly. I soon noticed that tears were rolling down from her eyes. I felt pity for the poor cow so I asked the housekeeper to lead the cow away.

Then my wife asked, “Why are you not killing the cow?” What will you sacrifice if you let her go?"

So I called the housekeeper back. He brought the cow with him. Once again I was moved by the tears that the cow shed. I then ordered the housekeeper to lead away the cow and sacrifice her for me. The cow was slain but when the housekeeper cut open its body, he found no flesh in it. It was just a cluster of bones. The healthy cow yielded nothing but bones so I was worried. So I said, "Dear housekeeper, why don't you keep the cow for yourself? Now fetch me a healthy, strong calf to sacrifice."

Moments later, the housekeeper fetched a calf to me. I did not know that the calf was actually my son. The calf ran from the housekeeper and came straight to me. The calf lay himself at my feet as if begging for mercy. I felt pity and let the calf go. So I said to the housekeeper, "Take this calf away. Take good care of it. Can you get me some other calf?"

The housekeeper said YES and went away with the calf to replace it. Some minutes later my wife came to me in anger. "Oh! Just what are you up to? You sent away the cow and now the calf too. What on earth will you sacrifice for Bairam? “

I said, "Whatever comes I'll not kill this innocent animal. Let it be alive."

Next morning as I was sitting alone, the housekeeper came to me. He said, "Sir, I bring some good news and some bad news for you."

"What is it, tell me now?" I said eagerly.

“Sir, yesterday as I was taking the calf to the shed, my daughter saw it. She was happy to see it first and then tears welled up in her eyes. She knows black magic so I knew she must have chanced upon something about the calf. On enquiry, she told me that the calf was actually your son. The cow I sacrificed for you yesterday as the slave woman whom your wife has transformed through black magic. She said that your wife hated them and so she carried out this evil taste."

‘But why had she first smiled and then shed tears?" I asked in a socked voice.

“She had smiled to see your son was living but she had started carrying because his mother, the cow, had been sacrificed."

I felt very grieved. Then I felt angry at my wife's evil doings. I went to the housekeeper's daughter. I pleaded her to change the calf back into my young son by the power of black magic that she knew. Oh! What joy it would be to embrace my son in flesh and blood.

But the housekeeper's daughter said, "Sir, I'll change the calf back into your son. As a reward you must let me be his bride. The second condition is that you'll not stop me from teaching your evil wife a lesson."

I agreed to both the conditions and soon I embraced my son tearfully. Just when the housekeeper's daughter was about to punish my wife, I said, "I think you should not be harsh. Don't kill her if possible."

"Alright," she said. "But I'll still let her feel what her son went through as an animal."

So, uttering some magical chants, she changed my evil wife into a hind that you see here. After many years, my son's wife passed way. In grief, he left home and has not been found yet. So I am going round the world leading my hind, looking for my lost son. “Now, Oh! Genie, whose story is more amazing the merchant's or mine.”

The old man's story had indeed been fascinating. So the genie agreed to grant a third of the merchant's life. Now the old man the hind sat aside. Minutes later, the old man with the two black dogs got up and said, "Oh! Genie, if you thought that story so rising, wait till you hear mine. But promise me a third of the merchant's punishment would be spared."

definition of adverbial clause

For those of you wondering what is an adverbial clause, here is a short definition of it.

An adverbial clause is a clause that functions as an adverb. In other words, it contains subject (explicit or implied) and predicate, and it modifies a verb.
  • I saw Joe when I went to the store. (explicit subject I)
  • He sat quietly in order to appear polite. (implied subject he)
According to Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk, adverbial clauses function mainly as adjuncts or disjuncts. In those functions they are like adverbial phrases, but in their potentiality for greater explicitness, they are more often like prepositional phrases
  • We left after the speeches ended. (Is it an adverbial clause, adverbial phrase or preposition phrase?)
  • We left after the end of the speeches.(Is it an adverbial clause, adverbial phrase or preposition phrase?)
Contrast adverbial clauses with adverbial phrases, which do not contain a clause.
I like to fly kites for fun.

Kinds of adverbial clauses

kind of clause common conjunctions function example
time clauses when, before, after, since, while, as, as long as, until, til, etc. (conjunctions that answer the question "when?"); hardly, scarcely, no sooner, etc. These clauses are used to say when something happens by referring to a period of time or to another event. Her father died when she was young.
conditional clauses if, unless These clauses are used to talk about a possible situation and its consequences. If they lose weight during an illness, they soon regain it afterwards.
purpose clauses in order to, so that, in order that These clauses are used to indicate the purpose of an action. They had to take some of his land so that they could extend the churchyard.
reason clauses because, since, as, given These clauses are used to indicate the reason for something. I couldn't feel anger against him because I liked him too much.
result clauses so..that These clauses are used to indicate the result of something. My suitcase had become so damaged on the journey home that the lid would not stay closed.
concessive clauses although, though, while These clauses are used to make two statements, one of which contrasts with the other or makes it seem surprising. I used to read a lot although I don't get much time for books now
place clauses where, wherever, anywhere, everywhere, etc. (conjunctions that answer the question "where?") These clauses are used to talk about the location or position of something. He said he was happy where he was.
clauses of manner as, like, the way These clauses are used to talk about someone's behaviour or the way something is done. I was never allowed to do things the way I wanted to do them.
clauses of exclamation what a(an), how, such, so Exclamations are used to express anger, fear, shock, surprise etc. They always take an exclamation mark (!). What horrible news! How fast she types! You lucky man!

So, from the  definition that i looked up from the web, in my understanding adverbial clause is :

An adverb clause that will meet three requirements.
  • First, it will contain a subject and verb.
  • You will also find a subordinate conjunction that keeps the clause from expressing a complete thought.
  • Finally, you will notice that the clause answers one of these three adverb questions: How?When? or Why?
Read these examples:
-Tommy scrubbed the bathroom tile until his arms ached.
*How did Tommy scrub? Until his arms ached, an adverb clause.
-Josephine's three cats bolted from the driveway once they saw her car turn the corner.
*When did the cats bolt? Once they saw her car turn the corner, an adverb clause.
-After her appointment at the orthodontist, Danielle cooked eggs for dinner  because she could easily chew an omelet.
*Why did Danielle cook eggs? Because she could easily chew an omelet, an adverb clause.

That is all i can say about adverbial clause if you have an easier explanation don't hesitate to leave me a comment. :)

Mou Rutan?

Gayus keeps giving surprises to our nation and a slap to all the apparatus out there. After the incident that happened recently, Gayus's lawyer, qoute that everyone else went in and out of the prison in defending his client.
"Like it's okay to do so if everyone else is doing it."
Hearing this claim government decides to make a new rule for the convicts and the officers.
Would that do any good? The government can't even keep up with the rules that they made up! Our rules are weak and inconsistent.

To me, if there are new rules planning to be made the more corruption will happen in our country! It’s not about the rules, the rules are fine and easy to be understood, it's the disciplinary and the appreciation of law enforcements that should be concerned. If there are new rules then there will be new ways in breaking them, if no extreme penalties are implemented for the perpetrators in order to set an example for others that this is a serious issue!  We should also appreciate our law enforcements much more!  If their lives are well taken care of by the government, they sure won't be tempted to take the bribery from the perpetrators and take the chances of losing their job and honor.!

Take for example Singapore, the  well being of teachers, police officers, fire fighters and other public servants are really taken care of. They are sufficiently paid that they don't feel the need to be bribed. They got what they need and they will feel better if they could do their job professionally that is why it's rarely we find a corruption case because their well being are taken care by the government and they are appreciated by the community. In any case, when laws are broken, extreme penalties are definitely implemented.
In consequent for Gayus act, an extra punishment should be implemented to set as an example for other big and powerful perpetrators that our justice system is indispensable. Only then will this act of intolerance stop. Others will honor our laws and will think before doing something that will crumple the laws which exists.

labour's issue

Been hearing a lot about the worker's from Indonesia being mistreated in Saudi lately. Heard that or respected president SBY is planning to accommodate hand phones which speed dials directly to the embassy of Indonesia based in Saudi for the workers who are going abroad.
My question is will it be effective?

In my perspective this plan is just a waste of money. Here are some facts that will base my opinions.

To do so, we will need  more budget coming from the government when everyone knows, the budgets that  we already have now and are allocated properly is still not enough in resolving every other problems that exists. Plus i doubt that the embassy would even answer any calls made to the office based on my experience and from Manohara's story if any one still remember. And if the employer of the workers knew about the phone it's not impossible that they would confiscate the phone if they did harm their workers right? Do you see my point? plus what if the workers took granted from what is given? like what if they sell the phone for something else.....? i mean i would if i had a free phone...

The thing is i really think the government should put a stand regarding what happened. It's time they make a fuss. Be strict and show that we won't tolerate anyone stepping on us! There is no need for a war to happen that's not what i was talking about. I meant like maybe they should make a political agreement or termination of political relations. Why are we so afraid in doing so, i mean we got all the things we need right here. It seems like we are so afraid in doing so.... if North Korea can do it why can't we. We got everything to stand up right here in our country. I'm not wanting a life like what exists in North Korea i just think we shouldn't be afraid to terminate a diplomatic relation with a certain country if that country is really stepping and playing with our dignity as a dependent country!

If the government doesn't stand up and make a sound sooner or later every other country will think that it is okay for them to step on us and still have a good relation with our country all because our government is to afraid to make a stand and fuss about things!
and that my friends is all the things i had in my mind and was hoping to know! now you have heard my opinion let me know what you think and leave me your comments. Speak up let me hear your voice and your point of view. thanks.
